Raleigh District Dietetic Association

The Raleigh District Dietetic Association is a non-profit organization of Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technician members serving the community by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being. 

We support other non-profit organizations, including the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education.

The Raleigh District Dietetic Association comprises of the following counties: Wake, Johnston, Cumberland, Harnett, Franklin, Moore, Vance, Sampson, Hoke, Warren

    President – 

    Phyllis Kennel, MS, RD, LDN

    Phyllis is the senior project manager for the Center for Genomic Sciences Unit at Duke University for the last year.  Prior to that she managed a research study called HEALTHY, A Middle School Program for Prevention of Diabetes at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Phyllis has also worked for Wake County Human Services in several positions as a Health Promotion Coordinator, WIC nutritionist and a school nutritionist. Phyllis received a B.S. degree in nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a M.S. degree in nutrition from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She is an active member of the American Dietetic Association, the North Carolina Dietetic Association (serves on the marketing committee and member-at-large) and the Raleigh District Dietetic Association (President). Phyllis has also actively served on RDDA’s LFMF 5K race as sponsorship chair and Kid’s race chair.

    Rebecca Houseal, MS, RD, LDN 

    Rebecca works in both private practice and as a WIC program nutritionist for Wake County.  Rebecca is a graduate of Meredith College with a Master of Science in Nutrition. She also holds a BS degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Western Carolina University.  This is Rebecca’s second year serving with the RDDA board. She will be serving as marketing committee chair.

    Membership Chair/Communication Chair – Ashley Bryan, RD LDN

  • Ashley is a clinical dietitian for long term care facilities in the greater Raleigh area. Prior to working in long term care, Ashley was a clinical dietitian for Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. Ashley received her B.S. degree in biology, with a concentration in nutrition, from North Carolina State University. She completed the dietetic internship at Meredith College. Ashley is serving on the board for Raleigh District Dietetic Association as membership chair.

  • Communication Chair Apprentice – Maryam Funmilayo

  • Maryam received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition from Kansas State University, where she majored in Public Health Nutrition. She is currently working towards her MS degree in Nutrition at Meredith College.

    She is a member of the Muslims in Dietetics and Nutrition (MIDAN) group, which is the seventh interest group member of the ADA. She currently serves on the MIDAN’s Ramadan Nutrition Research Taskforce, Student Member Advisory Committee, and the Newsletter Committee.

    Maryam is an active member and volunteer of the Women’s committee in her local Muslim community in Raleigh. She participates in the community’s annual health and nutrition conference. This past June, she participated in the nutrition conference held at the Islamic Center of Raleigh, and spoke to the women about etiquettes of eating and drinking. She really enjoys educating the women and girls about healthy living; and encourages them to consider dietetics as a career.

    Maryam is also a published freelance writer. Her articles on public health, nutrition, education, family life, personal reflection, and women’s issues have been published in both print and online magazines and newsletters.

    Her hobbies include reading, writing, attending aerobics and karate lessons, and spending quality time with her husband and four little kids. Her academic interests are in global public health, specifically maternal and child health, and holistic nutrition.

    This is Maryam’s first year serving with the RDDA board. She will be serving as the Communications Apprentice.
