Food Drive:

NCAND will be having a food drive to benefit the MANNA food bank in Asheville.  For each item of food donated you will receive a raffle ticket to be entered to win a Trader Joe's gift card.  Click here to see the most needed items for the food bank.

Social Event:

There will be a social event on Thursday September 12 from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm at 36 Montford Ave Asheville held on the second floor.  Heavy hor d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided, and this is open to all registered meeting attendees.  Door prizes will be given out at this event.

"Dietary Fat and Dopamine Neurotransmission"

Lecture Summary: The neurotransmitter dopamine aids in reward-based learning, arousal, and attributing value to salient stimuli like palatable food and drugs of abuse.  Dietary fat has been shown to change some intrinsic properties of dopamine neurons that affect how dopamine neurotransmission is regulated.  This talk will discuss recent laboratory findings on how saturated and unsaturated fat differentially alter the dopamine system in a pre-clinical model of weight gain. (1 CEU)

Lecture Summary: Food allergy management extends beyond avoidance and substitutions. Treatment plan applicability for management of food allergies also encompasses quality of life, access to appropriate foods, financial burden, nutritional completeness and transition of care.  (1 CEU)

Lecture Summary: Have you noticed that portions are bigger, food is everywhere, and the form of the food has changed? Could it be that these three changes are largely responsible for the obesity crisis we face today? Dr. Painter will also present solutions to help consumers be aware of their eating patterns and provide ways to reduce intake. (1 CEU)

Lecture Summary: The role that food and education play in breaking down barriers and building community is powerful. Without adequate access to nutritious food, our patients and clients struggle to manage their chronic disease and have to make difficult decisions between paying for food or medicine. In this session, we will discuss how increasing access to nutritious food, advancing knowledge of nutrition and health, and building a culture of support for food insecure families can elevate the dialogue needed to begin addressing the hunger and health issues facing our marginalized communities. (1 CEU)

"Personalized Dietary Treatment Based on Gut Microbiome"
Susan Yake, RDN, CD, CDE, CLT, FAND

Lecture summary: Accumulating evidence supports a role for the human gut microbiome in obesity, diabetes, metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and numerous other conditions, including cancer. Research about the role of the human microbiome in health and disease aim at personalized medicine approaches that combine human genetics, microbiome, and nutrients will be discussed. Blood glucose responses to a meal are highly personalized but can be predicted using an algorithm based on the microbiome and clinical parameters to normalize blood glucose control. (1 CEU)

Lecture Summary: The Low FODMAP Diet is a powerful tool for helping clients with chronic gastrointestinal distress, but it can be difficult to teach and harder for clients to implement. This presentation will help clinicians select the best candidates for the diet, teach it effectively, and most importantly, make it easy for clients to follow. (1 CEU)
