Lecture Summary: Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the client's own reasons for change within an environment of acceptance and compassion. Embracing the spirit and principles of motivational interviewing and possessing the necessary skills to elicit intrinsic motivation support both the development of client self-efficacy and an authentic patient-centered approach to management. This lecture will review the strategies of motivational interviewing and provide specific examples of how to effectively partner with patients to evoke motivation and assist in planning for change.
