"Nourishing Community: An Emergency Food Locker Program in Rural Western North Carolina" - Amanda Hege, MPH, RDN, FAND

Lecture Summary: The Emergency Food Locker Program at Bethel Elementary, located in rural western North Carolina, is making a significant impact by distributing healthy, locally sourced food to families in need. Fresh food lockers, situated behind the school gym, are stocked with approximately 50 pounds of food each week, encompassing fresh produce, non-perishable staples, frozen pre-made meals, and frozen meats, predominantly sourced through the High Country Food Hub, ensuring freshness and supporting local farmers. The program offers its services entirely free of charge, and anyone in need can easily sign up by completing an interest form. Each food box provided holds a value of $100-$150 worth of essential nourishment. Since its inception, the initiative has proved invaluable for more than 13 families, including 42 children, and serving a total of 400 boxes to date. The impact on participants has been substantial, with positive feedback highlighting the ease and convenience of the locker pickup process. Families have reported that they can allocate funds to other vital expenses like transportation and living costs. Moreover, this program has empowered families to eat healthier and alleviated concerns about running out of food, providing much-needed relief during challenging times. The positive influence of the Emergency Food Locker Program extends beyond the immediate recipients. The estimated impact on the local economy has reached an impressive $36,904 to date, stimulating the community and fostering support for local farmers. In summary, this program is making a substantial difference in the lives of families in rural western North Carolina. By providing fresh, healthy, and locally sourced food, it has not only improved the well-being of participants but has also contributed to the overall resilience and prosperity of the community.

"Precision Nutrition - Recent Advances and Controversies in Genetic Testing" - Ahmed El-Sohemy, PhD

Lecture Summary: There is increasing awareness among researchers, educators, healthcare professionals and consumers that the one-size-fits-all, population-based approach to nutritional guidance is inefficient and sometimes ineffective. Genetic differences can explain individual differences in response to various dietary factors and randomized controlled trials show that DNA-based dietary recommendations can improve compliance. With increasing awareness and demand for genetic testing, there is a need for healthcare professionals to have sufficient knowledge to understand and determine the benefits and limitations of the science and testing.
