Registered Dietitian (Part-time) 

Southern Regional AHEC is seeking a part-time Registered Dietitian. Position provides nutrition consultation and education for patients and providers. Primary responsibilities include application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including assessment, diagnosis, developing and implementing nutrition interventions, monitoring and evaluating progress, and communicating the nutrition care plan with other members of the care team by effective verbal and written communication. Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition or related field required. Registered Dietitian Nutritionist as delineated by the Commission on Dietetic Registration and Certification/Licensure as required by the State of North Carolina required. Two (2) years of clinical and nutrition related experience required. EOE.

We are looking for a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) to provide nutrition education and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) for the University community, including students, faculty, and staff. The main focus of this position is to provide clinically appropriate nutrition education and MNT toward the collaborative management of eating disorders and MNT for medical disorders including diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, and other medical nutrition disorders, as well as weight management counseling that utilizes a non-diet approach and health-at-every-size model. The RD/RDN will participate in weekly eating disorder consultation team activities and serve on collaborative teams within Student Health Services (SHS) to provide effective nutrition services within our Patient-Centered Medical Home. This position works collaboratively within the Healthy Campus Initiatives of Student Health Services and with campus and community partners toward strategic campus goals for healthy eating. Duties may include but are not limited to: one on one MNT, group nutrition appointments, mindful eating education and outreach opportunities across campus. This employee will research and provide educational/prevention nutrition information for SHS providers and health educators and serve as a resource for student interviews if time permits.

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, nutrition education, or other related area and 1year experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition and 3 years’ experience. Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian in South Carolina or eligible to become registered and licensed. CPR/BLS certified or ability to obtain.

Preferred Qualifications: Eligibility for registration to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Knowledge and experience in working with sports nutrition, eating disorders, clinical nutrition and chronic disease management (e.g. diabetes, celiac, Crohn’s, etc.). Experience working within a college health setting.

Positions Responsibilities:

This position will provide comprehensive and in-depth nutrition assessments and counseling to clients requiring therapeutic intervention that may include chronic or short-term medical conditions and disabilities of moderate to high-risk nature, along with case-consultation. This position will also apply nutritional theories and concepts, and depth of nutritional assessment and counseling.  Services will be provided through the following ARHS programs: Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), Diabetes, WIC, High Risk Maternal, and Healthy Communities.

Key Duties:

  • Provide comprehensive nutrition assessment, counseling, and follow-up to diabetes patients and their families according to referral by a physician.
  • Develop care plans and document in the medical record.
  • Confer with health care providers relating to the patients’ nutrition care plan and status in a 8-county area.
  • Develop, evaluate, and implement new diabetes education materials per program needs.
  • Provide appropriate education materials to patients and staff.
  • Provide necessary documentation according to the requirements of the programs and according to agency requirements.
  • Act as a liaison with the community to improve awareness of the Diabetes/MNT Program.
  • Provides nutrition and breastfeeding education to WIC participants

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Specialized knowledge and skill in comprehensive nutrition assessment and care planning, including problem diagnosis, counseling, and evaluation of clients from diverse backgrounds, ages, and with multiple and complex health and therapeutic nutritional needs.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and techniques for effecting behavior change with considerable skill in counseling.
  • Broad knowledge in health care ethics, documentation in the medical record, and quality assurance.
  • Knowledge in organization of community health and nutrition resources.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of current scientific information regarding nutrition, diet, and health and the ability to relate this information to clients, professionals, and the general public.
  • Skill in conducting a nutrition education or community needs assessment.
  • Fundamental knowledge of current principles and practices of public health, and program coordination.
  • Ability to interpret policy and protocols into operational procedures and work priorities.
  • Skill in organizing and coordinating the work of others.
  • Full range of skill in presenting ideas orally and in writing in a clear, concise manner.

Minimum Training and Experience:

Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetics Registration; or Master’s degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition, or Nutrition; or graduation from a Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education-approved Didactic Program in Dietetics and two years nutrition experience; or Dietetic Technician, Registered with the Commission on Dietetics Registration with a Bachelor’s degree in any subject area from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience; or a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Community Nutrition from an accredited four-year college or university and two years nutrition experience.

NOTE: All degrees shall be from an appropriately accredited institution.
